These properties encourage its wide use of Sapphire Al2O3 optics in hostile environments where optical transmission in the range from the visible to the near infrared is required. The main application of optical sapphire is large aperture windows, viewports, illuminators for common-aperture optical systems (visible+IR) what make sapphire the top actual material due to its optical and mechanical properties.
